Franciscans of Halifax Language selection: We, the Franciscans of Halifax, professing the Rule of St. Francis that was approved by Pope Honorius III, commit ourselves to live the Gospel. This way to lead our life, as far as feasible, is being structured according to the necessities of the place where we live, and according to the necessities of the Pastor, with whom we decide the schedule of the community.
Love for the poor, the sick and the marginalized is our particularity, as we consider ourselves the “minor” ones, i.e. the “last”. It is exactly these last, these “minors” that we want to serve.
In the whole Franciscan tradition, and at all times, the mysteries of the Incarnation and of the Cross always have held a strong attraction. It is the humble revelation of the great Trinitarian love for man...the same mystery that envelops the Cross: from the wood of the crib to the wood of the Cross. The Father had wanted to reveal his love for us in the humility of his son: “Who, though he was in the form of God, […] becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross. ” (Phil 2:6-8), says St. Paul. This movement of “Katabasis” (i.e. humiliation), of lowering himself in a specific place and in a determined time, brings us to the providential meaning of the local Church: “This is the place and time in which the Lord calls me to serve Him, and these are my brothers and sisters....”. Outside of this providential understanding of the dynamics between God and the Church, one enters in a random structuring, oriented towards the solution of practical or personal problems.
Therefore the Franciscans of Halifax not only want to serve the poor, but also the pastors, to whom the Bishop chooses to send them.
One fundamental condition is the fraternal life. In every place we go, we go as community, as family.
